How do I locate a PC's registry to enable me delete the reference of an unwanted file from it?

The file in question is 'C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe.' It pops up each time I boot my PC. I have used 'Windows Search" to trace the file without luck. Thanks for coming to my rescue.

How do I locate a PC's registry to enable me delete the reference of an unwanted file from it?
Type regedit in your run box and hit enter. Be careful what you edit tho!

And how did the rest of you learn? Theone, jim, and mark, I suppose you were all born with the knowledge, Phlip, it very well could be an svchost fake file! Some phishing malware uses this to gain access!
Reply:If you are using a Firewall (like Zone Alarm where mine indicates in Program Control) Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services – Entry Detail svchost.exe, then this should have Trusted Access – (ticks Access - Trusted and Internet, plus Server – Trusted, Internet X Not Trusted.
Reply:If you can't locate the registry what makes you think you can mess with it safely. Find someone who knows what they are doing seems to be the safest bet. If you screw up it could be a major job to put it right, if you can at all.
Reply:svchost is a major operating system service!!! Do not delete this!!!!!!!!!!!!

see this article
Reply:If you are using winXP, click on start, run, and type in regedit. This will open the command prompt and allow you to edit the registry, but be careful, one little mistake can wreak havoc with your operating system. You can also search 'How to edit the registry in windows XP', which will take you to a Microsoft database. There is much out there on editing the registry.
Reply:start menu %26gt; run

type regedit

hit enter
Reply:If you have to ask this question, you do not know enough to mess with the registry. You can damage your programs and nothing will pop up, even the start up. Why is it so important to get rid of that file? Surfed somewhere you should not have, huh?
Reply:start run regedit
Reply:This is a nessccary file for your computer to operate.

Never tamper with the registry!!!
Reply:svchost.exe as stated by others is a system process and should be well left alone if you want your computer to work.

If you want to clear bits out of your registry and to generally clear junk off your computer use a program called ccleaner. just google it. It's free. this will clear all your cookies and remove useless registry entries for your under the issues tab.

Advanced Uninstaller is even better if you would prefer but it does cost unless you know where to download it from elsewhere.
